WHAT DOES OM MEAN IN YOGA

The sacred chant “OM” is an ancient Sanskrit word that is used time and again while practicing yoga. To understand about this spiritual symbol in-depth, it is important to understand what does om mean in yoga. It has a deep meaning and signification connotation and is also frequently recited in Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist religions.

The sound of Om is usually chanted at the beginning or end of yoga sessions. In schools of different traditions and cultures, om pronounced as AUM, is used as a mantra of worship and devotion. OM signifies various different energies and is considered as the primitive sound expelled by the universe.

Om represents consciousness and vitality. It manifests the idea of shakti, the characteristics of which include liberation, preservation, and creation.

At the beginning of the yoga sessions, om is chanted as a means of evoking the attention of the yogis and compelling them to transform themselves into a state of spirituality, calmness, and meditation. It is of utmost essence to any yoga session and also helps in the unification of the mind, body, and soul.

The vibration or sound of “Oooo”, connotes the different energies present in the universe, the divine and cosmic principles, the spirit, knowledge, and the whole of the universe. The “Mmmm” sound represents transformation and the alteration a human body, soul, and mind are bound to undergo.

The spiritual sound of OM invokes a sense of spirituality and otherworldliness in the yogi’s mind while performing different asanas throughout their session. They feel devoted to the art they have inundated with and it also ensures the sanctity and the importance of the yoga session.

During the yoga sessions, the syllable OM is chanted in a community, where a sense of togetherness, unity, and warm intimacy is created between the people. It encourages them to practice a session of mindfulness, well-being, and self-perseverance.

While chanting the term “OM”, the human body is impelled to feel certain vibrations traveling throughout itself and consecutively, creating a sense of calm, composure, and peace. It also relaxes each and every muscle present in the body and cleanses the mind of any musty and stale thoughts.

Throughout the session, the body, the mind, and the spirit tunes itself and forms a connection with the different energies and entities of the universe. A sense of calmness is created, the heart becomes healthier, the nervous system improves, the flow of blood increases, and the yogis feel connected to their meditation, much more confidently and in a powerful way.

At the end of the session, OM is chanted as a means of signifying that the yoga session is over and the body is now ready to encounter the real world.

Conclusion

The practice of yoga and meditation must be inculcated in the daily routine of each and every person to propel them to feel more connected to the divine energy and forces that surround them. Practicing the art of chanting om enhances the mind, and is proven to have many positive benefits on the practitioner.
